All of us support this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without giving it a second thought. Here's where I vary from the rest of you. Up until September, I had actually been just like you. The first few weeks were fine I. managed to get all the little tasks that accumulate done. In the third week, a malaise began to creep in. I had nothing to do, nowhere to go, and loads of time to kill. I started to get depressed.

We have a no cigarette smoking policy in our house, imposed on the majority (me & my daddy) by the minority (my mother). From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's house and the fronts of 2 homes throughout the street. I began to choose up on when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the people who stroll past the home. I began with a friendly hi and advanced to the point where I normally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most people would interrupt me now, and say that many women at home do what I do, stop and talk with the other ladies. It's a extremely little street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 detached (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited home, and then next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a huge Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this site is the detached home where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage kids. They are in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's home. She recently separated from her hubby and remains in the process of moving. She is in her mid 30's and has two pre-teen children Emma and Becky. Next is our home. I haven't introduced myself yet, so now would be a great time. I'm John (28 ), and I cope with my mum Chrissie (45) and daddy Bob (52 ). Next along are some newbies. At this time in November, I didn't understand their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Of course, whenever I spoke with them, I used terms like a neighbour to bridge this space in my understanding. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they seemed to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a chap who worked somewhere in the City. I never talked to him, although what I'm about to tell you, so this is the last time I mention him.
