We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a doubt. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up till September, I had been much like you. Triggering to work every day, concerned more about what I was going to do with the day rather than what my neighbours would depend on. Then, I established a problem with my knee. A semi-serious problem. It didn't stop me from doing most things, I might stroll, run, and climb, however it did stop me from driving, which in turn stopped me from working. I signed up with the ranks of the long-lasting ill, continued to receive my paycheque, and sat and took it easy. The first couple of weeks were great I. managed to get all the little jobs that accumulate done. In the 3rd week, a despair began to sneak in. I had nothing to do, no place to go, and loads of time to eliminate. I started to get depressed.

We have a no smoking policy in our house, implemented on the majority (me & my father) by the minority (my mom). This suggests that whenever we want to smoke, we need to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's home and the fronts of 2 houses across the street. After smoking cigarettes practically continuously when the depression embeded in, I started to observe the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to detect when the mums walked their kids to school when they returned when they went out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies went about their daily routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the individuals who walk past the house. I began with a friendly hey there and progressed to the point where I usually walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most people would interrupt me now, and state that many ladies at home do what I do, chat and stop with the other ladies. It's a really small street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 separated (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited house, and after that next to that is. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a huge Irish female in her 60's. Last on this site is the separated house where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage boys.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's home. She recently separated from her husband and remains in the process of moving. She is in her mid 30's and has two pre-teen daughters Emma and Becky. Next is our house. I have not introduced myself yet, so now would be a good time. I'm John (28 ), and I deal with my mum Chrissie (45) and dad Bob (52 ). Next along are some newcomers. At this time in November, I didn't know their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Of course, whenever I spoke to them, I used terms like a neighbour to bridge this gap in my understanding. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they appeared to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a bloke who worked somewhere in the City. I never talked to him, even though what I'm about to inform you, so this is the last time I discuss him.
