I started to pick up on when the mums strolled their kids to school when they returned when they went out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would discover myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these women went about their everyday regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of the people who walk past the house. I started with a friendly hi and progressed to the point where I normally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat.
