We have a no smoking policy in our house, implemented on the majority (me & my father) by the minority (my mother). This means that whenever we want to smoke, we have to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's house and the fronts of two homes across the street. After smoking almost continuously when the anxiety set in, I began to observe the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I started to pick up on when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the canine for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these women went about their day-to-day regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of the people who stroll past your home. I began with a friendly hello and progressed to the point where I normally walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would interrupt me now, and say that the majority of women at home do what I do, talk and stop with the other women. I have two replies. One, I'm male, and 2, you don't know the half of it all. I think it's time I gave you a total image of our street and individuals who survive on it. It will can be found in useful later on. It's a very little street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 removed (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited house, and then next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly very first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a big Irish woman in her 60's. Then last on this site is the detached house where Steve and Mandy cope with their 2 teenage sons. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's home. Next is our house. Last on the row was a bloke who worked somewhere in the City.
