All of us support this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a second thought. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up till September, I had been much like you. The very first few weeks were fine I. managed to get all the little jobs that accumulate done. Then in the third week, a malaise started to sneak in. I had nothing to do, nowhere to go, and loads of time to eliminate. I began to get depressed.

We have a no smoking cigarettes policy in our home, enforced on the majority (me & my daddy) by the minority (my mom). This means that whenever we wish to smoke, we need to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's home and the fronts of two houses across the street. After smoking practically continually when the depression set in, I started to observe the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to detect when the mums strolled their kids to school when they returned when they went out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies tackled their day-to-day routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of individuals who stroll past your house. I started with a friendly hello and progressed to the point where I generally walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would disrupt me now, and state that most ladies in the house do what I do, talk and stop with the other women. I have 2 replies. One, I'm male, and two, you don't know the half of it all. I think it's time I gave you a total picture of our street and the people who live on it. It will can be found in useful later on. It's a very small street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 detached (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited home, and then next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this site is the separated house where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage boys. They are in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we begin with Linda's house. Next is our home. Last on the row was a bloke who worked someplace in the City.
