We have a no smoking policy in our home, imposed on the majority (me & my daddy) by the minority (my mom). This means that whenever we want to smoke, we need to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's house and the fronts of two houses across the street. After smoking nearly continuously when the depression embeded in, I began to discover the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to detect when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would find myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these women tackled their daily regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the individuals who walk past the home. I started with a friendly hello and advanced to the point where I typically stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most people would disrupt me now, and state that most females at house do what I do, chat and stop with the other females. It's a very little street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 removed (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant house, and after that beside that is. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a huge Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this site is the detached house where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage boys.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's house. She just recently separated from her other half and is in the process of moving. She is in her mid 30's and has two pre-teen children Emma and Becky. Next is our house. I haven't presented myself yet, so now would be a good time. I'm John (28 ), and I deal with my mum Chrissie (45) and papa Bob (52 ). Next along are some newbies. At this time in November, I didn't understand their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Obviously, whenever I spoke with them, I used terms like a neighbour to bridge this gap in my understanding. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they appeared to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a bloke who worked somewhere in the City. I never talked to him, even though what I'm about to inform you, so this is the last time I discuss him.
