All of us go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without giving it a second thought. Here's where I vary from the rest of you. Up up until September, I had actually been much like you. Setting off to work every day, worried more about what I was going to do with the day rather than what my neighbours would be up to. Then in the third week, a despair began to sneak in. I had absolutely nothing to do, nowhere to go, and loads of time to kill. I began to get depressed.

We have a no smoking cigarettes policy in our home, imposed on the bulk (me & my dad) by the minority (my mom). This means that whenever we want to smoke, we need to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's house and the fronts of 2 houses across the street. After smoking cigarettes nearly continually when the depression embeded in, I began to discover the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I began to pick up on when the mums strolled their kids to school when they returned when they headed out shopping, when they took the canine for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would discover myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies tackled their daily routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the people who walk past the home. I began with a friendly hi and progressed to the point where I usually walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. The majority of individuals would interrupt me now, and say that the majority of ladies at house do what I do, talk and stop with the other ladies. It's a really little street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 separated (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant home, and then beside that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a big Irish female in her 60's. Last on this site is the detached home where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage children. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we begin with Linda's home. She just recently separated from her spouse and is in the process of moving. She is in her mid 30's and has 2 pre-teen daughters Emma and Becky. Next is our home. I have not introduced myself yet, so now would be a great time. I'm John (28 ), and I deal with my mum Chrissie (45) and dad Bob (52 ). Next along are some newcomers. At this time in November, I didn't know their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Naturally, whenever I talked to them, I used terms like a neighbour to bridge this space in my knowledge. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they seemed to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a chap who worked somewhere in the City. I never spoke to him, although what I'm about to tell you, so this is the last time I discuss him.
