We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without giving it a 2nd thought. After cigarette smoking nearly constantly when the depression embeded in, I began to discover the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I began to pick up on when the mums strolled their kids to school when they returned when they headed out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies set about their everyday regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of the people who walk past the house. I started with a friendly hello and progressed to the point where I normally walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. The majority of people would disrupt me now, and state that a lot of ladies in your home do what I do, chat and stop with the other women. I have 2 replies. One, I'm male, and two, you do not understand the half of it all. I believe it's time I offered you a complete photo of our street and the people who live on it. It will come in helpful later on. It's a very little street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 detached (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited house, and then beside that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a big Irish female in her 60's. Then last on this site is the detached house where Steve and Mandy cope with their two teenage sons. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we begin with Linda's house. Next is our house. Last on the row was a bloke who worked somewhere in the City.
