We all support this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a reservation. Here's where I vary from the rest of you. Up till September, I had actually been much like you. Setting off to work every day, concerned more about what I was going to do with the day instead of what my neighbours would depend on. I established a problem with my knee. A semi-serious issue. It didn't stop me from doing most things, I could stroll, run, and climb, but it did stop me from driving, and that in turn stopped me from working. I signed up with the ranks of the long-term sick, continued to receive my paycheque, and sat and took it easy. The first few weeks were great I. managed to get all the little jobs that accumulate done. In the third week, a despair began to sneak in. I had absolutely nothing to do, no place to go, and loads of time to eliminate. I started to get depressed.

We have a no smoking cigarettes policy in our house, enforced on the majority (me & my dad) by the minority (my mother). This suggests that whenever we wish to smoke, we need to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's home and the fronts of 2 houses across the street. After smoking practically constantly when the depression set in, I started to observe the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to pick up on when the mums strolled their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these women tackled their daily regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the individuals who walk past the house. I began with a friendly hello and advanced to the point where I typically walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. The majority of people would interrupt me now, and state that many women at house do what I do, stop and chat with the other females. It's a really small street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 detached (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited home, and then next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a big Irish woman in her 60's. Last on this site is the detached home where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage children. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's house. Next is our house. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City.
