We all support this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a doubt. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up up until September, I had actually been similar to you. In the third week, a despair started to creep in. I had nothing to do, no place to go, and loads of time to kill. I began to get depressed.

We have a no smoking policy in our house, implemented on the bulk (me & my father) by the minority (my mother). This implies that whenever we want to smoke, we need to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's house and the fronts of 2 homes across the street. After smoking cigarettes nearly continually when the depression set in, I began to discover the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to pick up on when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies tackled their daily regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of individuals who walk past your house. I started with a friendly hello and progressed to the point where I generally walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would interrupt me now, and state that most women at home do what I do, chat and stop with the other women. I have two replies. On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's home. Next is our house. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City.
