We all accompany this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without offering it a second thought. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. We have a no smoking policy in our home, imposed on the majority (me & my father) by the minority (my mother). This means that whenever we wish to smoke, we need to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's house and the fronts of two houses across the street. After cigarette smoking nearly continuously when the anxiety set in, I started to notice the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to detect when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these women tackled their everyday regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of individuals who walk past your home. I started with a friendly hello and progressed to the point where I usually stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most people would interrupt me now, and state that the majority of women at home do what I do, stop and talk with the other women. I have 2 replies. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always very first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a big Irish lady in her 60's. Then last on this site is the removed house where Steve and Mandy deal with their 2 teenage boys. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we begin with Linda's house. She recently separated from her partner and remains in the process of moving. She remains in her mid 30's and has two pre-teen daughters Emma and Becky. Next is our house. I have not presented myself yet, so now would be a good time. I'm John (28 ), and I cope with my mum Chrissie (45) and daddy Bob (52 ). Next along are some newbies. At this time in November, I didn't understand their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Naturally, whenever I spoke to them, I used terms like a neighbour to bridge this gap in my understanding. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they appeared to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a bloke who worked someplace in the City. I never ever talked to him, even though what I'm about to tell you, so this is the last time I mention him.
