We all accompany this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without giving it a second thought. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up till September, I had been just like you. We have a no cigarette smoking policy in our home, enforced on the bulk (me & my father) by the minority (my mother). This implies that whenever we want to smoke, we need to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's house and the fronts of two homes across the street. After cigarette smoking nearly continually when the depression set in, I began to discover the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to pick up on when the mums strolled their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these women went about their daily regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the people who walk past your house. I started with a friendly hello and progressed to the point where I normally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most people would interrupt me now, and state that a lot of ladies at home do what I do, stop and chat with the other women. I have two replies. One, I'm male, and two, you do not know the half of it all. I think it's time I gave you a total photo of our street and individuals who reside on it. It will come in useful in the future. It's a very small street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 detached (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant home, and after that next to that is. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this site is the detached house where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage children.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's house. She just recently separated from her partner and is in the process of moving. She remains in her mid 30's and has two pre-teen children Emma and Becky. Next is our house. I have not presented myself yet, so now would be a great time. I'm John (28 ), and I live with my mum Chrissie (45) and daddy Bob (52 ). Next along are some newcomers. At this time in November, I didn't know their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Obviously, whenever I spoke to them, I used terms like a neighbour to bridge this space in my understanding. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they appeared to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City. I never spoke with him, although what I'm about to inform you, so this is the last time I discuss him.
