All of us accompany this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without offering it a second thought. Here's where I vary from the rest of you. Up till September, I had been similar to you. We have a no cigarette smoking policy in our house, enforced on the majority (me & my father) by the minority (my mother). This suggests that whenever we wish to smoke, we have to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's house and the fronts of 2 homes across the street. After smoking cigarettes almost continuously when the depression set in, I started to discover the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to detect when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the canine for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies set about their day-to-day routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of the people who walk past the house. I started with a friendly hey there and progressed to the point where I typically stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would interrupt me now, and state that the majority of ladies in the house do what I do, talk and stop with the other women. I have 2 replies. One, I'm male, and two, you do not understand the half of it all. I think it's time I offered you a complete image of our street and the people who survive on it. It will come in useful later on. It's a really small street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 removed (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited house, and after that beside that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish woman in her 60's. Then last on this website is the removed house where Steve and Mandy deal with their two teenage kids. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's home. She recently separated from her husband and is in the procedure of moving. She remains in her mid 30's and has two pre-teen daughters Emma and Becky. Next is our home. I have not introduced myself yet, so now would be a great time. I'm John (28 ), and I cope with my mum Chrissie (45) and dad Bob (52 ). Next along are some newbies. At this time in November, I didn't know their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Obviously, whenever I talked to them, I used terms like a neighbour to bridge this space in my knowledge. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they appeared to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a chap who worked somewhere in the City. I never ever spoke to him, despite the fact that what I'm about to tell you, so this is the last time I mention him.
