All of us go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a second thought. Here's where I vary from the rest of you. Up until September, I had actually been much like you. Triggering to work every day, concerned more about what I was going to do with the day instead of what my neighbours would depend on. Then, I established a problem with my knee. A semi-serious issue. It didn't stop me from doing most things, I might walk, run, and climb, but it did stop me from driving, and that in turn stopped me from working. I signed up with the ranks of the long-lasting sick, continued to receive my paycheque, and sat and took it simple. The first couple of weeks were great I. managed to get all the little tasks that accumulate done. In the third week, a malaise started to sneak in. I had nothing to do, nowhere to go, and loads of time to kill. I began to get depressed.

We have a no smoking cigarettes policy in our home, implemented on the majority (me & my father) by the minority (my mother). This means that whenever we want to smoke, we have to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's home and the fronts of 2 houses across the street. After smoking nearly constantly when the anxiety set in, I started to notice the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I began to detect when the mums strolled their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the canine for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would discover myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies went about their everyday regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the people who stroll past the house. I started with a friendly hi and progressed to the point where I normally walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most people would disrupt me now, and say that the majority of women at home do what I do, chat and stop with the other women. I have 2 replies. One, I'm male, and two, you don't understand the half of it all. I believe it's time I offered you a total image of our street and the people who reside on it. It will come in useful later on. It's a really small street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 separated (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant home, and then next to that is. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a huge Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this site is the removed house where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage kids.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we start with Linda's house. Next is our home. Last on the row was a chap who worked somewhere in the City.
