We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a second thought. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up till September, I had been just like you. Setting off to work every day, worried more about what I was going to finish with the day instead of what my neighbours would depend on. I established a problem with my knee. A semi-serious problem. It didn't stop me from doing most things, I might walk, run, and climb, but it did stop me from driving, which in turn stopped me from working. I joined the ranks of the long-lasting sick, continued to receive my paycheque, and sat and took it easy. The first couple of weeks were great I. managed to get all the little jobs that accumulate done. Then in the third week, a malaise started to sneak in. I had nothing to do, nowhere to go, and loads of time to kill. I began to get depressed.

We have a no smoking cigarettes policy in our home, implemented on the bulk (me & my dad) by the minority (my mom). This means that whenever we wish to smoke, we need to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's home and the fronts of two houses across the street. After smoking cigarettes practically constantly when the depression embeded in, I started to see the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to pick up on when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these women tackled their daily routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the individuals who walk past the home. I began with a friendly hello and progressed to the point where I typically stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most people would disrupt me now, and state that the majority of ladies at house do what I do, stop and chat with the other women. It's a very small street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 detached (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited house, and then next to that is. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish woman in her 60's. Last on this site is the removed house where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage children.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we start with Linda's house. She recently separated from her other half and remains in the process of moving. She remains in her mid 30's and has two pre-teen children Emma and Becky. Next is our house. I have not presented myself yet, so now would be a good time. I'm John (28 ), and I cope with my mum Chrissie (45) and daddy Bob (52 ). Next along are some newcomers. At this time in November, I didn't understand their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Naturally, whenever I talked to them, I used terms like a neighbour to bridge this space in my knowledge. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they appeared to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a bloke who worked someplace in the City. I never spoke with him, even though what I'm about to tell you, so this is the last time I mention him.
