We have a no smoking policy in our home, enforced on the majority (me & my daddy) by the minority (my mother). This indicates that whenever we want to smoke, we need to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's home and the fronts of two houses across the street. After cigarette smoking almost continuously when the depression embeded in, I began to see the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I began to pick up on when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the pet for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would find myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these women tackled their daily regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the individuals who walk past the home. I started with a friendly hi and progressed to the point where I typically stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would disrupt me now, and state that a lot of ladies at home do what I do, stop and chat with the other ladies. It's a very small street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 separated (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant house, and after that next to that is. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a huge Irish woman in her 60's. Last on this site is the detached home where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage children.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's home. She recently separated from her spouse and is in the process of moving. She is in her mid 30's and has 2 pre-teen daughters Emma and Becky. Next is our house. I have not presented myself yet, so now would be a good time. I'm John (28 ), and I cope with my mum Chrissie (45) and dad Bob (52 ). Next along are some newbies. At this time in November, I didn't understand their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Obviously, whenever I spoke to them, I used terms like a neighbour to bridge this gap in my understanding. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they seemed to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City. I never ever spoke with him, even though what I'm about to inform you, so this is the last time I mention him.
