We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without giving it a doubt. Here's where I vary from the rest of you. Up up until September, I had actually been just like you. It didn't stop me from doing most things, I might stroll, run, and climb, but it did stop me from driving, and that in turn stopped me from working. I joined the ranks of the long-lasting sick, continued to get my paycheque, and sat and took it easy. The first couple of weeks were great I. managed to get all the little tasks that accumulate done. In the third week, a despair began to sneak in. I had absolutely nothing to do, no place to go, and loads of time to kill. I began to get depressed.

We have a no smoking cigarettes policy in our house, implemented on the majority (me & my daddy) by the minority (my mother). This means that whenever we wish to smoke, we need to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's home and the fronts of 2 houses across the street. After smoking practically continuously when the anxiety set in, I began to discover the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I started to detect when the mums strolled their kids to school when they returned when they headed out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would discover myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these women set about their daily routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the people who walk past the home. I started with a friendly hello and progressed to the point where I usually stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would interrupt me now, and state that most ladies at house do what I do, chat and stop with the other ladies. It's a really little street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 separated (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited home, and after that beside that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a huge Irish female in her 60's. Then last on this site is the separated house where Steve and Mandy cope with their two teenage sons. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we begin with Linda's home. She just recently separated from her spouse and is in the process of moving. She remains in her mid 30's and has 2 pre-teen daughters Emma and Becky. Next is our home. I haven't presented myself yet, so now would be a good time. I'm John (28 ), and I cope with my mum Chrissie (45) and father Bob (52 ). Next along are some newbies. At this time in November, I didn't know their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Naturally, whenever I spoke to them, I used terms like a neighbour to bridge this space in my knowledge. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they seemed to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a bloke who worked someplace in the City. I never talked to him, although what I'm about to tell you, so this is the last time I mention him.
