We all support this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a doubt. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up until September, I had actually been just like you. Triggering to work every day, concerned more about what I was going to do with the day instead of what my neighbours would be up to. Then, I developed a problem with my knee. A semi-serious issue. It didn't stop me from doing most things, I might stroll, run, and climb, but it did stop me from driving, which in turn stopped me from working. I joined the ranks of the long-term sick, continued to get my paycheque, and sat and took it easy. The first few weeks were fine I.
managed to get all the little jobs that accumulate done. Then in the 3rd week, a malaise began to sneak in. I had nothing to do, no place to go, and loads of time to kill. I began to get depressed.
We have a no smoking policy in our home, enforced on the majority (me & my dad) by the minority (my mom). This suggests that whenever we want to smoke, we have to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's home and the fronts of two homes across the street. After cigarette smoking almost continuously when the anxiety embeded in, I began to see the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to pick up on when the mums strolled their kids to school when they returned when they headed out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these women went about their day-to-day routines.
November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of the people who walk past the house. I started with a friendly hello and progressed to the point where I usually stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. The majority of people would disrupt me now, and state that most women at home do what I do, talk and stop with the other women. I have two replies. One, I'm male, and two, you don't know the half of all of it. I think it's time I provided you a total photo of our street and the people who reside on it. It will be available in useful later. It's a really small street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 removed (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant home, and then beside that is.
Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a big Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this site is the removed house where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage children.
On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's house. Next is our home. Last on the row was a chap who worked somewhere in the City.
