All of us go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a second thought. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Then in the third week, a malaise began to creep in. I had nothing to do, no place to go, and loads of time to eliminate. I started to get depressed.

We have a no smoking cigarettes policy in our house, imposed on the majority (me & my daddy) by the minority (my mother). This means that whenever we wish to smoke, we need to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's house and the fronts of 2 houses across the street. After cigarette smoking nearly continuously when the anxiety embeded in, I started to see the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I started to detect when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would discover myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies went about their day-to-day regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the individuals who walk past the house. I started with a friendly hey there and advanced to the point where I normally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. The majority of people would interrupt me now, and say that the majority of ladies at home do what I do, stop and chat with the other females. It's a really little street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 detached (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited house, and then next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a huge Irish woman in her 60's. Then last on this site is the removed home where Steve and Mandy deal with their two teenage children. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we start with Linda's home. Next is our home. Last on the row was a bloke who worked someplace in the City.
