We all accompany this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without giving it a second thought. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up up until September, I had actually been just like you. Setting off to work every day, concerned more about what I was going to do with the day instead of what my neighbours would be up to. The very first few weeks were fine I. managed to get all the little jobs that accumulate done. Then in the third week, a despair started to sneak in. I had absolutely nothing to do, nowhere to go, and loads of time to kill. I started to get depressed.

We have a no smoking policy in our house, implemented on the bulk (me & my father) by the minority (my mom). This suggests that whenever we want to smoke, we have to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's house and the fronts of 2 homes across the street. After smoking almost continually when the anxiety embeded in, I began to observe the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to detect when the mums strolled their kids to school when they returned when they headed out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would discover myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these females set about their day-to-day routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the people who walk past the house. I started with a friendly hi and progressed to the point where I usually stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. A lot of people would disrupt me now, and say that most females at home do what I do, talk and stop with the other ladies. It's a really little street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 detached (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant house, and then beside that is. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a huge Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this site is the removed house where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage sons.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's home. She just recently separated from her partner and remains in the procedure of moving. She remains in her mid 30's and has 2 pre-teen children Emma and Becky. Next is our house. I have not presented myself yet, so now would be a good time. I'm John (28 ), and I live with my mum Chrissie (45) and papa Bob (52 ). Next along are some newbies. At this time in November, I didn't understand their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Of course, whenever I talked to them, I used terms like a neighbour to bridge this gap in my knowledge. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they appeared to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a bloke who worked somewhere in the City. I never spoke to him, although what I'm about to tell you, so this is the last time I discuss him.
