We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a 2nd thought. Setting off to work every day, worried more about what I was going to do with the day rather than what my neighbours would be up to. After smoking almost continuously when the anxiety embeded in, I began to notice the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to detect when the mums walked their kids to school when they returned when they went out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these women set about their daily regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the people who stroll past the house. I started with a friendly hi and progressed to the point where I usually stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most people would disrupt me now, and say that many ladies in the house do what I do, chat and stop with the other women. I have 2 replies. One, I'm male, and 2, you do not know the half of all of it. I believe it's time I offered you a complete photo of our street and the people who live on it. It will come in useful later. It's a very small street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 removed (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant house, and then next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly very first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a huge Irish female in her 60's. Last on this website is the separated house where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage kids. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we begin with Linda's house. She just recently separated from her hubby and remains in the process of moving. She is in her mid 30's and has 2 pre-teen children Emma and Becky. Next is our house. I haven't presented myself yet, so now would be a good time. I'm John (28 ), and I live with my mum Chrissie (45) and dad Bob (52 ). Next along are some newcomers. At this time in November, I didn't understand their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Obviously, whenever I talked to them, I used terms like a neighbour to bridge this gap in my understanding. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they seemed to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City. I never ever talked to him, although what I'm about to inform you, so this is the last time I mention him.
