We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a second thought. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. In the third week, a despair began to creep in. I had nothing to do, nowhere to go, and loads of time to eliminate. I started to get depressed.

We have a no smoking policy in our home, enforced on the bulk (me & my father) by the minority (my mother). This indicates that whenever we want to smoke, we need to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's house and the fronts of 2 houses across the street. After smoking cigarettes practically continuously when the depression set in, I started to notice the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I began to detect when the mums strolled their kids to school when they returned when they headed out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies tackled their daily routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of the people who walk past your house. I began with a friendly hi and progressed to the point where I generally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would disrupt me now, and state that a lot of females at home do what I do, stop and chat with the other women. I have 2 replies. One, I'm male, and two, you don't know the half of all of it. I think it's time I offered you a total picture of our street and the people who reside on it. It will can be found in beneficial later on. It's a really small street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 separated (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant house, and then next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a huge Irish female in her 60's. Last on this site is the separated house where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage sons. They are in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we start with Linda's home. Next is our house. Last on the row was a bloke who worked someplace in the City.
