We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without offering it a second idea. Setting off to work every day, worried more about what I was going to do with the day rather than what my neighbours would be up to. After smoking nearly continually when the depression embeded in, I started to observe the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to detect when the mums strolled their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would find myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies set about their day-to-day regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the people who walk past the house. I started with a friendly hi and advanced to the point where I typically stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. A lot of people would interrupt me now, and state that most ladies at house do what I do, chat and stop with the other women. It's a really little street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 removed (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited home, and after that beside that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a huge Irish lady in her 60's. Then last on this website is the detached home where Steve and Mandy deal with their two teenage boys. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's house. She recently separated from her partner and is in the procedure of moving. She remains in her mid 30's and has 2 pre-teen children Emma and Becky. Next is our home. I have not presented myself yet, so now would be a good time. I'm John (28 ), and I live with my mum Chrissie (45) and dad Bob (52 ). Next along are some newcomers. At this time in November, I didn't understand their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Obviously, whenever I spoke to them, I used terms like a neighbour to bridge this gap in my knowledge. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they seemed to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a chap who worked somewhere in the City. I never talked to him, despite the fact that what I'm about to inform you, so this is the last time I discuss him.
