We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a 2nd idea. Setting off to work every day, worried more about what I was going to do with the day rather than what my neighbours would be up to. After smoking cigarettes practically continually when the depression set in, I started to notice the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to detect when the mums walked their kids to school when they returned when they headed out shopping, when they took the pet for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would discover myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these women tackled their everyday routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of individuals who walk past the house. I started with a friendly hi and advanced to the point where I usually stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. The majority of people would disrupt me now, and say that the majority of females at home do what I do, stop and talk with the other women. I have two replies. One, I'm male, and 2, you don't know the half of it all. I believe it's time I gave you a complete picture of our street and the people who live on it. It will be available in useful later on. It's a really small street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 removed (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant home, and then next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a big Irish lady in her 60's. Then last on this site is the separated home where Steve and Mandy cope with their two teenage sons. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we start with Linda's house. Next is our home. Last on the row was a bloke who worked someplace in the City.
