We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without offering it a second thought. Here's where I vary from the rest of you. Up till September, I had been similar to you. We have a no smoking cigarettes policy in our house, imposed on the majority (me & my daddy) by the minority (my mother). This means that whenever we want to smoke, we need to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's home and the fronts of 2 houses across the street. After smoking cigarettes practically continuously when the depression embeded in, I started to discover the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to detect when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the canine for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would discover myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these women went about their day-to-day regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of the people who walk past your house. I started with a friendly hi and progressed to the point where I typically walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would disrupt me now, and state that most ladies at home do what I do, chat and stop with the other women. I have 2 replies. One, I'm male, and two, you do not know the half of all of it. It's a very little street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 separated (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant house, and after that next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a huge Irish female in her 60's. Last on this website is the detached house where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage boys. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's house. Next is our house. Last on the row was a bloke who worked somewhere in the City.
