We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without offering it a 2nd thought. Setting off to work every day, worried more about what I was going to do with the day rather than what my neighbours would be up to. After cigarette smoking practically continually when the anxiety embeded in, I started to see the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to pick up on when the mums strolled their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these women tackled their everyday routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the individuals who walk past the house. I began with a friendly hello and progressed to the point where I typically walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. A lot of people would disrupt me now, and say that a lot of ladies at house do what I do, stop and talk with the other ladies. It's a really little street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 separated (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited home, and after that next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly very first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish woman in her 60's. Then last on this site is the detached house where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage boys. They are in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's home. Next is our house. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City.
