I had absolutely nothing to do, nowhere to go, and loads of time to eliminate. I began to get depressed.

We have a no smoking policy in our house, imposed on the bulk (me & my father) by the minority (my mother). This indicates that whenever we want to smoke, we need to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's house and the fronts of two homes across the street. After smoking cigarettes practically continuously when the depression set in, I started to observe the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to detect when the mums strolled their kids to school when they returned when they went out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would discover myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these females went about their day-to-day routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the individuals who walk past the house. I started with a friendly hello and progressed to the point where I generally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many individuals would disrupt me now, and say that the majority of women at home do what I do, talk and stop with the other ladies. It's a really small street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 separated (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant house, and then beside that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish lady in her 60's. Then last on this site is the detached house where Steve and Mandy cope with their two teenage kids. They are in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we begin with Linda's house. She just recently separated from her husband and remains in the procedure of moving. She is in her mid 30's and has two pre-teen daughters Emma and Becky. Next is our house. I haven't presented myself yet, so now would be a great time.
