We have a no smoking policy in our house, enforced on the bulk (me & my father) by the minority (my mom). This suggests that whenever we want to smoke, we need to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's house and the fronts of 2 houses across the street. After smoking cigarettes almost constantly when the depression embeded in, I started to see the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to pick up on when the mums walked their kids to school when they returned when they went out shopping, when they took the pet for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies tackled their day-to-day regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of individuals who walk past your home. I began with a friendly hi and advanced to the point where I usually walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most people would disrupt me now, and state that the majority of females in your home do what I do, talk and stop with the other women. I have 2 replies. One, I'm male, and two, you do not know the half of all of it. I think it's time I offered you a total picture of our street and the people who survive on it. It will be available in useful later on. It's a very little street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 separated (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited home, and then next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly very first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish woman in her 60's. Then last on this site is the detached home where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage kids. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's house. Next is our home. Last on the row was a bloke who worked somewhere in the City.
