All of us go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without offering it a reservation. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. We have a no smoking policy in our house, imposed on the bulk (me & my father) by the minority (my mom). This means that whenever we want to smoke, we need to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's house and the fronts of two houses across the street. After smoking cigarettes practically constantly when the depression embeded in, I began to notice the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to detect when the mums strolled their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the pet for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would discover myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these females set about their daily regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the individuals who stroll past the house. I began with a friendly hello and advanced to the point where I normally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would interrupt me now, and state that the majority of females at house do what I do, stop and chat with the other ladies. It's a very little street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 separated (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant house, and then next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a huge Irish lady in her 60's. Then last on this site is the removed house where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage sons. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's home. Next is our home. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City.
