I began to pick up on when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these females went about their day-to-day routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the people who walk past your house. I started with a friendly hey there and advanced to the point where I usually walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most people would interrupt me now, and say that the majority of females in the house do what I do, talk and stop with the other women. I have 2 replies. One, I'm male, and two, you don't know the half of it all. I believe it's time I offered you a complete image of our street and the people who survive on it. It will come in useful later. It's a really little street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 separated (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant house, and then next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly very first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish woman in her 60's. Then last on this site is the separated house where Steve and Mandy deal with their 2 teenage children. They are in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we begin with Linda's house. Next is our house. Last on the row was a bloke who worked somewhere in the City.
