We have a no cigarette smoking policy in our house, imposed on the majority (me & my dad) by the minority (my mother). This suggests that whenever we wish to smoke, we need to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's home and the fronts of two houses across the street. After smoking nearly constantly when the depression embeded in, I started to see the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I began to detect when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies set about their daily regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the people who stroll past the home. I began with a friendly hi and advanced to the point where I generally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many individuals would disrupt me now, and say that most ladies at house do what I do, stop and chat with the other women. It's a very little street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 detached (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited house, and after that beside that is. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a big Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this site is the separated house where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage sons.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we start with Linda's home. She recently separated from her hubby and remains in the process of moving.
