With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would discover myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these women went about their day-to-day regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the individuals who walk past the home. I started with a friendly hi and advanced to the point where I normally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would interrupt me now, and say that the majority of women at home do what I do, chat and stop with the other women. It's a really little street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 separated (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant house, and after that next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always very first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this website is the separated home where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage sons. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we begin with Linda's house. Next is our home. Last on the row was a chap who worked somewhere in the City.
