After smoking cigarettes nearly continuously when the depression embeded in, I began to see the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to detect when the mums walked their kids to school when they returned when they went out shopping, when they took the pet for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these women set about their daily regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of the people who walk past your house. I began with a friendly hey there and progressed to the point where I normally walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most people would interrupt me now, and state that most women in the house do what I do, stop and talk with the other women. I have two replies. One, I'm male, and two, you don't understand the half of everything. I believe it's time I offered you a total photo of our street and the people who survive on it. It will come in helpful later on. It's a very small street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 separated (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited house, and after that next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always very first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a big Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this site is the detached home where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage kids. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we begin with Linda's house. She recently separated from her husband and remains in the procedure of moving. She is in her mid 30's and has 2 pre-teen children Emma and Becky. Next is our house. I have not presented myself yet, so now would be a great time.
