With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies set about their everyday routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of individuals who walk past your house. I began with a friendly hello and progressed to the point where I generally walk down to the garden gate and have a chat.
