I had nothing to do, no place to go, and loads of time to kill. I started to get depressed.

We have a no smoking policy in our home, enforced on the bulk (me & my father) by the minority (my mother). This means that whenever we want to smoke, we need to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's house and the fronts of two houses across the street. After smoking practically constantly when the depression set in, I began to observe the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to detect when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the canine for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would discover myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these females set about their everyday routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of the people who walk past your home. I started with a friendly hello and advanced to the point where I normally walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. The majority of people would interrupt me now, and state that most females at home do what I do, stop and chat with the other women. I have two replies. It's a very small street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 removed (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited home, and then beside that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a huge Irish lady in her 60's. Then last on this site is the removed house where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage kids. They are in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we start with Linda's home. She recently separated from her spouse and remains in the process of moving. She remains in her mid 30's and has two pre-teen children Emma and Becky. Next is our home. I have not introduced myself yet, so now would be a great time. I'm John (28 ), and I cope with my mum Chrissie (45) and papa Bob (52 ). Next along are some newbies. I never ever talked to him, even though what I'm about to inform you, so this is the last time I discuss him.
