We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without offering it a second idea. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would discover myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies set about their everyday regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the people who walk past the house. I started with a friendly hey there and advanced to the point where I normally walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. The majority of people would interrupt me now, and state that a lot of women at home do what I do, stop and chat with the other ladies. It's a really little street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 detached (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant house, and after that next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always very first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a huge Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this site is the separated home where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage kids. They are in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we start with Linda's house. Next is our house. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City.
