All of us support this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without offering it a doubt. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up till September, I had actually been much like you. Setting off to work every day, concerned more about what I was going to do with the day instead of what my neighbours would depend on. Then, I developed a problem with my knee. A semi-serious issue. It didn't stop me from doing most things, I might walk, run, and climb, but it did stop me from driving, which in turn stopped me from working. I signed up with the ranks of the long-term sick, continued to get my paycheque, and sat and took it easy. The very first couple of weeks were fine I. managed to get all the little tasks that accumulate done. In the third week, a despair began to creep in. I had nothing to do, no place to go, and loads of time to eliminate. I started to get depressed.

We have a no smoking cigarettes policy in our house, imposed on the majority (me & my daddy) by the minority (my mother). This means that whenever we want to smoke, we need to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's home and the fronts of 2 homes across the street. After smoking cigarettes almost continuously when the depression set in, I began to discover the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I started to detect when the mums strolled their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies set about their daily routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the individuals who stroll past the home. I began with a friendly hello and advanced to the point where I usually walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would interrupt me now, and state that many females at house do what I do, talk and stop with the other females. It's a really little street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 detached (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant home, and then beside that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always very first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a huge Irish female in her 60's. Last on this site is the separated home where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage kids. They are in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's home. Next is our home. Last on the row was a bloke who worked somewhere in the City.
