We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without offering it a second idea. Setting off to work every day, concerned more about what I was going to do with the day rather than what my neighbours would be up to. We have a no cigarette smoking policy in our house, implemented on the majority (me & my father) by the minority (my mother). After smoking cigarettes nearly continuously when the depression embeded in, I started to notice the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to detect when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the canine for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these females tackled their everyday routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the people who walk past the home. I started with a friendly hi and progressed to the point where I normally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. A lot of people would interrupt me now, and state that most females at home do what I do, talk and stop with the other women. It's a really little street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 removed (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited home, and after that next to that is. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a huge Irish female in her 60's. Last on this site is the removed house where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage children.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's home. She just recently separated from her partner and remains in the process of moving. She remains in her mid 30's and has 2 pre-teen daughters Emma and Becky. Next is our house. I have not presented myself yet, so now would be a great time. I'm John (28 ), and I cope with my mum Chrissie (45) and daddy Bob (52 ). Next along are some newcomers. At this time in November, I didn't know their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Obviously, whenever I spoke to them, I used terms like a neighbour to bridge this space in my understanding. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they appeared to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a chap who worked somewhere in the City. I never ever talked to him, even though what I'm about to tell you, so this is the last time I discuss him.
