All of us support this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a doubt. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up till September, I had been much like you. The first couple of weeks were fine I. managed to get all the little tasks that accumulate done. Then in the third week, a despair started to sneak in. I had nothing to do, nowhere to go, and loads of time to kill. I began to get depressed.

We have a no smoking policy in our home, imposed on the majority (me & my dad) by the minority (my mother). This indicates that whenever we wish to smoke, we need to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's home and the fronts of two homes across the street. After smoking practically continually when the depression set in, I began to see the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I began to pick up on when the mums strolled their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the canine for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these women went about their everyday routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the individuals who walk past the house. I began with a friendly hello and advanced to the point where I generally walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most people would disrupt me now, and state that most women at house do what I do, chat and stop with the other females. It's a really small street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 separated (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited house, and after that next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always very first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish lady in her 60's. Then last on this site is the detached home where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage sons. They are in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we begin with Linda's home. Next is our house. Last on the row was a bloke who worked someplace in the City.
