We have a no smoking policy in our home, implemented on the bulk (me & my daddy) by the minority (my mom). This means that whenever we wish to smoke, we have to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's home and the fronts of two homes across the street. After cigarette smoking almost constantly when the depression set in, I started to discover the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to pick up on when the mums strolled their kids to school when they returned when they headed out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies tackled their everyday regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the individuals who walk past the house. I began with a friendly hi and progressed to the point where I generally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most individuals would disrupt me now, and say that most ladies at home do what I do, stop and chat with the other females. It's a really small street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 detached (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant house, and after that next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always very first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a huge Irish female in her 60's. Then last on this site is the separated house where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage boys. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's house. She just recently separated from her husband and remains in the process of moving. She is in her mid 30's and has two pre-teen children Emma and Becky. Next is our house. I have not presented myself yet, so now would be a great time. I'm John (28 ), and I live with my mum Chrissie (45) and daddy Bob (52 ). Next along are some newcomers. At this time in November, I didn't know their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Naturally, whenever I talked to them, I used terms like a neighbour to bridge this gap in my understanding. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they seemed to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City. I never ever spoke with him, although what I'm about to tell you, so this is the last time I mention him.
