All of us support this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without offering it a reservation. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up till September, I had been just like you. Setting off to work every day, worried more about what I was going to do with the day rather than what my neighbours would depend on. Then, I established a problem with my knee. A semi-serious issue. It didn't stop me from doing most things, I might stroll, run, and climb, but it did stop me from driving, and that in turn stopped me from working. I joined the ranks of the long-term sick, continued to receive my paycheque, and sat and took it simple. The first couple of weeks were great I. managed to get all the little jobs that pile up done. In the 3rd week, a despair began to sneak in. I had absolutely nothing to do, nowhere to go, and loads of time to kill. I began to get depressed.

We have a no cigarette smoking policy in our home, imposed on the majority (me & my daddy) by the minority (my mom). This means that whenever we want to smoke, we have to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's home and the fronts of 2 houses across the street. After smoking almost continuously when the anxiety embeded in, I started to discover the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to pick up on when the mums strolled their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies set about their daily regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the people who stroll past the house. I started with a friendly hello and advanced to the point where I generally walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. The majority of people would disrupt me now, and say that most females at home do what I do, stop and chat with the other ladies. It's a very small street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 detached (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited home, and then next to that is. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a huge Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this site is the separated home where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage children.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we start with Linda's home. She just recently separated from her hubby and remains in the procedure of moving. She remains in her mid 30's and has 2 pre-teen daughters Emma and Becky. Next is our house. I have not presented myself yet, so now would be a great time. I'm John (28 ), and I cope with my mum Chrissie (45) and papa Bob (52 ). Next along are some newcomers. At this time in November, I didn't know their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Obviously, whenever I talked to them, I used terms like a neighbour to bridge this gap in my knowledge. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they seemed to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City. I never talked to him, even though what I'm about to inform you, so this is the last time I discuss him.
