All of us accompany this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without giving it a second thought. Here's where I vary from the rest of you. Up until September, I had been much like you. I had absolutely nothing to do, nowhere to go, and loads of time to kill. I started to get depressed.

We have a no smoking policy in our home, enforced on the majority (me & my daddy) by the minority (my mother). This indicates that whenever we want to smoke, we need to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's house and the fronts of 2 houses across the street. After smoking nearly continuously when the depression embeded in, I began to observe the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to pick up on when the mums strolled their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these females tackled their daily regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the people who stroll past your house. I started with a friendly hey there and progressed to the point where I normally walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. The majority of people would interrupt me now, and say that most ladies at home do what I do, chat and stop with the other women. I have 2 replies. It's a really little street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 detached (that's 5 buildings in all). She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a huge Irish female in her 60's. Last on this site is the separated home where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage boys. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's house. Next is our home. Last on the row was a bloke who worked someplace in the City.
