I joined the ranks of the long-term sick, continued to get my paycheque, and sat and took it easy. The first few weeks were fine I. managed to get all the little tasks that pile up done. In the third week, a despair began to sneak in. I had nothing to do, no place to go, and loads of time to kill. I began to get depressed.

We have a no smoking cigarettes policy in our house, enforced on the bulk (me & my dad) by the minority (my mom). This means that whenever we want to smoke, we need to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's house and the fronts of 2 houses across the street. After cigarette smoking almost constantly when the depression embeded in, I started to notice the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to pick up on when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the pet for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would discover myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies set about their everyday regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of individuals who stroll past your house. I started with a friendly hey there and advanced to the point where I typically walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would interrupt me now, and state that many females in your home do what I do, stop and talk with the other women. I have 2 replies. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a huge Irish woman in her 60's. Then last on this website is the detached house where Steve and Mandy cope with their two teenage boys. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we begin with Linda's home. She recently separated from her other half and remains in the process of moving. She remains in her mid 30's and has two pre-teen children Emma and Becky. Next is our house. I have not introduced myself yet, so now would be a good time. I'm John (28 ), and I cope with my mum Chrissie (45) and papa Bob (52 ). Next along are some newcomers. At this time in November, I didn't understand their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Naturally, whenever I spoke to them, I used terms like a neighbour to bridge this gap in my understanding. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they appeared to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City. I never spoke to him, although what I'm about to tell you, so this is the last time I mention him.
