We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without offering it a second idea. Setting off to work every day, concerned more about what I was going to do with the day rather than what my neighbours would be up to. We have a no smoking policy in our home, imposed on the bulk (me & my daddy) by the minority (my mother). This means that whenever we want to smoke, we have to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's house and the fronts of two houses across the street. After cigarette smoking practically continuously when the anxiety embeded in, I started to observe the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to pick up on when the mums strolled their kids to school when they returned when they headed out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would discover myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these females tackled their day-to-day regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of the people who stroll past the house. I started with a friendly hello and progressed to the point where I usually walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would disrupt me now, and say that most ladies at home do what I do, stop and talk with the other women. I have two replies. One, I'm male, and two, you don't know the half of it all. I think it's time I offered you a total picture of our street and the people who survive on it. It will come in helpful later on. It's a very little street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 detached (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant house, and then next to that is. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a big Irish woman in her 60's. Last on this website is the removed home where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage kids.

On the right-hand side of the road, we begin with Linda's house. Next is our home. Last on the row was a chap who worked somewhere in the City.
