We all accompany this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without offering it a doubt. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up till September, I had been just like you. Setting off to work every day, concerned more about what I was going to make with the day rather than what my neighbours would be up to. Then, I developed a problem with my knee. A semi-serious problem. It didn't stop me from doing most things, I could walk, run, and climb, however it did stop me from driving, and that in turn stopped me from working. I signed up with the ranks of the long-term ill, continued to receive my paycheque, and sat and took it easy. The first couple of weeks were fine I. managed to get all the little jobs that pile up done. Then in the 3rd week, a malaise started to sneak in. I had absolutely nothing to do, nowhere to go, and loads of time to eliminate. I began to get depressed.

We have a no smoking cigarettes policy in our house, imposed on the majority (me & my father) by the minority (my mom). This implies that whenever we wish to smoke, we have to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's house and the fronts of 2 houses across the street. After smoking nearly continually when the depression set in, I started to see the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I began to detect when the mums strolled their kids to school when they returned when they went out shopping, when they took the pet for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these women tackled their everyday routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of the people who stroll past your house. I began with a friendly hello and advanced to the point where I typically walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. The majority of people would disrupt me now, and state that most ladies in the house do what I do, stop and talk with the other women. I have 2 replies. One, I'm male, and two, you do not understand the half of everything. I think it's time I offered you a total photo of our street and the people who live on it. It will come in helpful later on. It's a really small street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 detached (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited home, and after that next to that is. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a huge Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this site is the separated home where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage sons.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's house. She just recently separated from her spouse and remains in the process of moving. She is in her mid 30's and has two pre-teen daughters Emma and Becky. Next is our home. I haven't introduced myself yet, so now would be a great time. I'm John (28 ), and I cope with my mum Chrissie (45) and papa Bob (52 ). Next along are some beginners. At this time in November, I didn't know their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Of course, whenever I spoke with them, I used terms like a neighbour to bridge this space in my understanding. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they appeared to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a chap who worked somewhere in the City. I never ever spoke with him, despite the fact that what I'm about to tell you, so this is the last time I mention him.
