Then in the 3rd week, a malaise started to creep in. I had nothing to do, nowhere to go, and loads of time to eliminate. I started to get depressed.

We have a no smoking cigarettes policy in our house, imposed on the bulk (me & my father) by the minority (my mom). This implies that whenever we want to smoke, we have to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's house and the fronts of 2 houses across the street. After smoking cigarettes nearly constantly when the depression set in, I began to notice the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to pick up on when the mums walked their kids to school when they returned when they went out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies set about their daily regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of the people who walk past the house. I started with a friendly hello and progressed to the point where I normally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most people would disrupt me now, and state that a lot of females in your home do what I do, chat and stop with the other women. I have 2 replies. One, I'm male, and 2, you do not understand the half of it all. I believe it's time I gave you a complete image of our street and individuals who live on it. It will come in beneficial in the future. It's a really small street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 removed (that's 5 buildings in all). She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish woman in her 60's. Last on this site is the removed house where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage boys. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we begin with Linda's house. She recently separated from her partner and is in the procedure of moving. She is in her mid 30's and has 2 pre-teen daughters Emma and Becky. Next is our home. I haven't introduced myself yet, so now would be a great time. I'm John (28 ), and I live with my mum Chrissie (45) and daddy Bob (52 ). Next along are some newbies. I never ever spoke with him, despite the fact that what I'm about to tell you, so this is the last time I mention him.
