All of us accompany this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without offering it a second thought. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up until September, I had been just like you. I joined the ranks of the long-lasting sick, continued to get my paycheque, and sat and took it simple. The very first few weeks were great I. managed to get all the little tasks that pile up done. Then in the 3rd week, a malaise began to sneak in. I had nothing to do, no place to go, and loads of time to eliminate. I began to get depressed.

We have a no smoking cigarettes policy in our house, imposed on the bulk (me & my father) by the minority (my mother). This implies that whenever we want to smoke, we have to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's house and the fronts of 2 houses across the street. After cigarette smoking nearly continuously when the depression embeded in, I began to notice the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I started to detect when the mums walked their kids to school when they returned when they went out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would find myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these women set about their everyday regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of the people who walk past the house. I began with a friendly hey there and progressed to the point where I typically stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. The majority of people would disrupt me now, and state that most women at home do what I do, stop and talk with the other women. I have 2 replies. One, I'm male, and 2, you don't know the half of it all. I think it's time I gave you a complete picture of our street and individuals who live on it. It will come in useful later. It's a very little street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 separated (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited home, and after that next to that is. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a big Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this site is the separated house where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage boys.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we start with Linda's house. Next is our house. Last on the row was a chap who worked somewhere in the City.
