From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's house and the fronts of two houses across the street. After cigarette smoking practically continuously when the depression set in, I started to observe the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I started to pick up on when the mums strolled their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies went about their day-to-day regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the people who stroll past the home. I started with a friendly hey there and progressed to the point where I usually walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. A lot of people would interrupt me now, and say that many ladies at house do what I do, talk and stop with the other women. It's a very small street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 separated (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited home, and after that next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this site is the separated house where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage children. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we start with Linda's house. Next is our home. Last on the row was a chap who worked somewhere in the City.
